Kaolin, Pigments and Fillers

Kaolin or china clay is a naturally occurring, hydrated aluminium silicate crystalline mineral formed over many millions of years by the hydrothermal degradation of granite rocks. Kaolin is characterised by its lamellar or platy particle shape, its fine particle size and its chemical inertness. The combination of platy shape and fine size results in improved spacing of TiO2 particles in a paint film and improved opacity. Generally, the finer the particle size, the greater the improvement in opacity. Kaolin particles also have surface hydroxyl groups, which contribute to thixotropy in water based paints and inks via hydrogen bonding. Depending on properties and chemical treatment of the deposits, several types of raw material with pre-defined characteristics can be produced. Some types can be used for dishes or sanitary purposes, some for tiles or stove tiles, others for technical PRODUCTS such as grinding wheels or electric insulation made of ceramic compounds. A selection of raw materials is used for burning and subsequent reduction and grinding to fine masses. These PRODUCTS are common in high-temperature (of up to 1,500 °C) applications or as temper PRODUCTS in technical ceramics.
